West Lothian Chamber Of Commerce Business Excellence Awards Shines Spotlight On A Glittering Showcase Of Local Talent
The annual West Lothian Business Excellence Awards was held on Friday, 24th November, at Macdonald Houstoun House Hotel, Uphall. These awards celebrate the success and achievements of local businesses and the Chamber of Commerce continues to host the awards as we feel it is important that West Lothian is recognised for its business success and that it is highlighted as a region that holds unlimited potential for the future.
This thought was expressed by our keynote speaker, Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport, who were this year’s main event sponsor, as he called on businesses in West Lothian to realise the extent of its ‘pulling power potential’ as a world class hub for investment. He went on to further describe the region as ‘exceptionally ambitious’, encouraging communities to see the potential that is there to be harnessed and used as a business opportunity.
This year’s winners represent true success and all over business excellence, making them prime examples of what makes West Lothian a true hub for business. It is now time to introduce the worthy winners from the Business Excellence Awards 2017:
Entrepreneur and Business Start Up Award
Sponsored by West Lothian Council- Business Gateway is presented to a successful business start- up company which demonstrated entrepreneurial potential for long-term business success.
This year’s winner was Waste Switch Ltd, launched in 2015, to assist businesses to comply with new legislation and save businesses money by optimising their waste disposal and recycling opportunities. The company now offers a holistic approach to waste management including training and consultancy services, which they are looking to expand to the rest of the UK and international markets.
Shona Sibbald Women in Business Award
Sponsored by Sibbald Training recognises the hard work and achievements of business women in West Lothian.
Professional dancer Joanne Tod was recognised for displaying outstanding female entrepreneurship within her business, JHM Dance and Fitness. Established in 2003, Joanne brought great quality and affordable dance instruction to West Lothian. Since her initial set up in the region, Joanne has grown her business to offer further education opportunities with the SQA, classes from nursery age all the way to adults while developing a team of highly qualified dance instructors. Recently expanding with a 3-month renovation project of Broxburn Bingo hall to offer her clients a purpose-built facility to ensure she keeps offering a first-class service.
Excellence in Staff Learning and Development Award
Sponsored by West Lothian College acknowledges a business that demonstrates excellence in the development of staff skills and knowledge.
Awarded this year was Dacoll Ltd, an independent provider of high quality, reliable and affordable IT services, established in 1969. This family business prioritises values, long service and investing in young people. They have integrated their key objective of creating an environment for continuous employment by committing to their investment in to their staff including encouraging the younger generation. Throughout their growth, Dacoll has not lost sight in supporting its staff through re-training, continuous personal development, staff increase and introducing young people to the industry through Modern Apprentice Schemes.
Best Business Award

John Bean Technologies (JBT) was crowned ‘Best Business’ for their sustained business performance that has a had a positive effect on the area. In 2009, JBT acquired Double D Food Engineering, a manufacturing company based in Broxburn for over 30 years. JBT is now a leading global solutions provider to the food processing industry, manufacturing an impressive range of high quality, equipment and employs over 3500 staff worldwide. JBT manufacturing excellence demonstrates a significant positive impact on West Lothian with continued investment into their Livingston premises and operations.
High Growth and Innovation Award
Sponsored by West Lothian Economic Growth Plan and presented to a business that shows outstanding growth or developed a new and innovative approach to business.
David Philp Commercials Ltd, a family business established in the 1970’s as a panel shop, now running as a market leader offering comprehensive range of state of the art commercial vehicle services was recognised for their business growth and innovative approach. With continuous investment and commitment to customer care, the business has had strong recognition throughout their industry. Recently acquiring a new 3-acre adjacent site to help with the businesses growing needs including a growth within staff numbers. The business is also currently working on a new innovative coating for commercial vehicles which will have significant potential in the UK and international markets.
Best Tourism Business Award
Sponsored by Mercure hotel to recognises a business that demonstrates all- round excellence and helps make West Lothian a first-choice destination.
Showcasing the best of tourism within West Lothian was Williamscraig Holiday Cottages. Williamscraig offers visitors first class accommodation while working to support and promote West Lothian and is continually looking at new innovative ways to benefit their clients, new and returning, whilst creating a memorable and premier holiday experience promoting West Lothian as a destination for visitors.
Enterprising School Award
Sponsored by Lareine Engineering is presented to a school demonstrating and delivering commitment to innovation, creativity, and enterprise in the curriculum.
St Kentigern’s Academy was awarded for their commitment to ensuring all students have the opportunity to a positive and sustained destination. This was helped by the school’s creation of and maintaining of strong partnerships within the education and business community. Having previous successful partnership, the school created the 16+ Hub initiative which looks to help facilitate a variety of learning pathways for students including opportunities for work placements, modern apprenticeships, college places etc, which leads to a more positive experience for the student.
DYW West Lothian Regional Employer Award
Sponsored by DYW West Lothian Regional Group recognises a business that is supporting and developing the future workforce.
Best Western Hilcroft Hotel is the first business to receive this new award in recognition of their active involvement in supporting the future workforce. The Hilcroft Hotel have been involved in a range of activities to aimed at inspiring the young workforce but their recent innovative collaboration with St Kentigern’s Academy truly highlights their commitment to the Developing the Young Workforce agenda. The collaborative partnership will see a class of S5 students, who are studying National 5 Hospitality Skills for Work, benefiting from a tailored work experience programme which will help them apply what they have learnt in the classroom into a real life working experience. This collaboration is a great example of how a local employer and a local school can successfully work in partnership to benefit the future workforce.

Over 180 people attended this year’s event, where alongside the award announcements, the attendees were entertained by the West African percussion and dance group, Ayawara throughout the night.
As part of the evening, a Charity Draw was held to raise funds for local charity The Larder Cook School and through the generous donations from SCHUH, Macdonald Houstoun House Hotel, Artisan Cheesecakes, Claire Watson Photography, Harburn Golf Club and Macraes Seafood over £1400 was raised.
